Get 5GB free storage with Google Drive – Step by step guide

Google Drive Step by step guideGmail boosts the usage of Google Drive, allowing the use of Gmail as a storage medium. Google Drive is a file storage and synchronization service by Google that was released on April 24, 2012. Just like any other cloud services such as Dropbox and Skydrive, Google Drive lets you store and access your files anywhere – on the web, on your hard drive, or on the go.

How to get Google Drive Account:

Google Drive is part of Google Services, so if you are using a Gmail account, you just need to enable it and claim your 5GB free space. To access and activate the service, visit http://drive.google.com.

You can install Google Drive for your Mac/PCas soon as you have access to Google Drive on the web.

Windows

  1. Go to http://drive.google.com.
  2. Click the Download Google Drive for your PC button.
  3. Open googledrivesync.exe to automatically install and start Google Drive on your PC. (You may receive a warning that Google Drive is an application downloaded from the Internet. Click the Open button.)
  4. Enter your Google Account username and password in the window that opens. This will be the account associated with Google Drive for your PC.
  5. Complete the installation package instructions.
  6. Launch Google Drive for your PC from the Start menu. Drag files and folders into your Google Drive folder to begin syncing items to My Drive (part of Google Drive on the web).

Mac

  1. Go to http://drive.google.com.
  2. Click the Download Google Drive for your Mac button.
  3. Open installgoogledrive.dmg.
  4. Open the installation file and drag the Google Drive icon to your Applications folder.
  5. Open Google Drive from your Applications folder. (You may receive a warning that Google Drive is an application downloaded from the Internet. Click the Open button.)
  6. Enter your Google Account username and password in the window that opens. This will be the account associated with Google Drive for your Mac.
  7. Complete the installation package instructions.
  8. Launch Google Drive for your Mac from the toolbar. Drag files and folders into your Google Drive folder to begin syncing items to My Drive (part of Google Drive on the web).

Once you obtain and install the service, you can access your files from anywhere.

With Google Drive, you can:

  • Access, edit, update your Google Docs. It is now a built-in feature of Google Drive. You can add and reply to comments on anything (PDF, image, video file, etc.) and receive notifications when other people comment on shared items.
  • Access your files from anywhere – you can also install the Google Drive App in your Android or iOS devices such as smartphones and tablets.
  • Search everything within your Google Drive. Search by keyword and filter by file type, owner and more.  Drive can even recognize text in scanned documents using Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology.
