O+ 8.15 Review: Specs, Feature, Hands-On Video
O Plus has really gone a long way in the Philippine mobile market, and following the big hit of its dual core O+ 8.12 is the O Plus’ new flagship phone, the O+8.15 labelled as the company’s first quad core Android device. Yup, it’s a quad core phone and I wonder how this gonna actually double the speed of my present phone haha. And here’s what I got, some drowning facts about this phone after a week of hands-on experience.
O+ 8.15 Review
The O+ 8.15 is a truly impressive powerhouse smartphone. It is packed with powerful 1.2 Gigahertz quad core processor coupled with 1GB RAM and Power VR SGX 544MP GPU providing smoother multitasking, navigation and fast downloads. It uses Mediatek’s MT6589 which is delivered in advanced 28nm process technology. And another plus thing: crisp HD 1080p video recording via 8 megapixel rear camera. I actually thought that I’m fine with my 8.12 dual core phone, until O Plus handed this over to me, though you won’t notice the performance difference just by switching between home screen to apps drawer to widgets etc, you’ll feel the real game changer when you’re into heavy apps like 3D games, playing HD movies, browsing heavy content websites and all other things. At quadrant benchmark, it scores high – 4,050, while at Antutu, it got 12,690. It also got a high grade in Nenamark graphics performance test, the score is 45.7. The screen’s response and touch flow is very fluid and you won’t really see or feel any lags.Though not the world’s slimmest at 8.4mm, O Plus did a very good job designing the device, its slightly curve style with chrome accents on its edges gives an elegantly looking impression. Well, it really deserves praise; it’s a premium phone after all.
The 5-inch IPS LCD is also outstanding, it’s bright with rich colors, and I didn’t have issues seeing it in bright sunlight. The display has 1280 x 720 resolutions at 294ppi. The screen is made of DragonTrail, a new super-tough material made by Japan’s Asahi Glass aiming to steal some of Corning Gorilla’s market. According to press material, it is six times stronger than conventional glass, stronger than typical window soda-lime glass and has a “beautiful, pristine finish”. And as confirmed to us by O Plus representative, the O+ 8.15 is scratch resistant, and has the same toughness with O+ 8.12 (See scratch and shatter proof video of O+ 8.12). I am accustomed with 4.7inch phone and this size is relatively new to me, but as I hold it, it’s still handy and fits right in my palm, bigger is actually better specially when pixels aren’t stretched, and this 5-incher phone with HD resolution is absolutely more than fine. Every aspect of the screen is very well detailed as colors are rich and vibrant.

As mentioned earlier, O+ 8.15 is equipped with 8 megapixel rear camera complete with LED flash and Backside Illumination Sensor (BSI) which helps increase the amount of light captured and thereby improves low-light performance. What’s wonderful on the rear camera is its capability of recording full HD 1080p videos (See recorded video), it actually overruns Alcatel Idol Ultra’s 720p recording capability, noting that both have 8 megapixel cameras. The camera app has a lot to offer, from panoramic to taking multiple shots via burst mode, self-timer, HDR and you can also do some finishing touches, tap the Edit button and you’ll be able to crop, auto enhance, remove red eyes and more. The front is also equipped with 2 megapixel camera which can be used for HD video calls.
Another important aspect which I give greater weight when it comes to the phone’s hardware support is its staying power. Of course, I would say all of us always demand and look for a longer battery life. And it’s good to note that O+8.15 features a 2000mAh Lithium-Polymer battery which stays powered on for almost 24 hours. With WIFI on, moderate use of text messaging, calls, and internet browsing, I managed to stay up longer, worth enough for this type of smartphone. MeditaTek also emphasized that MT6589 is smaller and more thermal-efficient and lower power consumption, the quad-core Cortex-A7 micro architecture is focused on providing the best energy efficiency and says it has five times the energy efficiency of a single Cortex-A7 and Cortex A8 processors.

Aside from O Plus’ hit feature “Air Shuffle” which permits a touch-less touch phone experience through a motion sensor (Samsung added this feature on its Galaxy S4 and they called it “Air Gesture”), there is another stunning feature, it supports USB OTG or USB On-The-Go meaning you can directly connect your mobile phone to any USB device such as flash drive, keyboard, mouse, printer almost everything, possibilities are endless. Though the box didn’t come with USB OTG cable, price of this cable is very cheap, around
Update: We bought USB OTG, price is P30 only and it’s working fine with O+ 8.15.
O+ 8.15 Accessories: A lot of smartphone users are very passionate with accessories, so we asked one of our friends in O Plus if they will sell O+ 8.15 Accessories and confirmed that though the device is scratch resistant, flip covers are on their way. Great. (we’ll update you guys once they’re up for selling)
Along with the competitive price tag, there are four standout features that elevate the O+ 8.15 above the competition: the incredibly fetching 5-inch screen, the 8 megapixel that records real full HD video, formidable speed – it’s quad core, and of course, the one of a kind feature: Air Shuffle.
